Alumni and Friends
DASH Athletics is seeking donors/adopters for its Adopt A Student-Athlete (AAS) Programme. Assistance required is USD 250 to USD 300 per year.
The DASH Athletics Adopt A Student-Athlete (AAS) Programme was first initiated in September 2019. It is meant to support needy 6th Form (Grades 12 & 13) student-athletes with school related costs. However a few persons in lower grades have been included in later years. By DASH policy, no student-athlete’s school related costs are covered 100% by the programme. DASH contends that parents must demonstrate some level of responsibility for their child’s education. Hence the programme is one of assistance and not a scholarship.
Over the 4 years of the programme 36 student-athletes have benefitted. Their current status:
A. 18 (50%) have since gone off on athletic scholarships to US tertiary institutions
B. 13 are still in school at XLCR - 12 on the Track & Field team and one has joined the girls’ football team. Of the 12 on the Track team, 10 are in 6th Form.
C. 3 have graduated and left XLCR.
D. 2 have migrated.
Elements of the Programme
1. Student-athletes are recommended by the head coaches as possible candidates for the programme.
2. Candidates must be in good standing as members of the Track Team
3. Candidates must have demonstrated regular school and class attendance
4. They must have demonstrated proper deportment
5. They must be in need of assistance - such as being from a single parent home; unemployed or underemployed parent(s) with large families, etc.
6. Candidates should be in Grades 12 or 13. However in real needy cases, student-athletes from a lower grade will be considered.
7. Successful candidates are selected by the DASH Athletics Programme Manager in consultation with the Head Coaches.
The Programme (Steps)
1. DASH reaches out to XLCR Alumni and Friends, prior to the start of the new school year each September, for possible assistance to the identified student-athletes.
2. Assistance required is USD 250 to USD 300 per year; In some cases less than this amount will be accepted.
3. A profile of each student-athlete who has been accepted is created
4. Profiles of successful candidates are matched with respondents who have agreed to take part in the programme.
5. These profiles are then sent to the adopters, who may chose to contact their adoptees and build a relationship with them
6. Adopters are cautioned to consult DASH for advice before sending money or gifts directly to their adoptees. This to guard against any possibly NCAA rule violation that might militate against the athlete gaining an athletic scholarship.
7. Many of the adopters have chosen to develop a relationship with their adoptees, even after they have left XLCR and matriculated to college.
8. Funds are paid over to the Bursar of the school, and are distributed to the parent(s) on a needs basis. The parent is asked to submit a proforma invoice for the item to be purchased.
9. Since September 2022 the school has agreed to partner with DASH Athletics on this programme, by waiving a portion of the school fees for some of these student-athletes.
Looking forward to you assisting a needy student-athlete through the DASH AAS Programme.
